North Cottage is one of three secluded cottages converted from the original Thwaite Farmhouse and Barns on the Scargill Estate, near Barnard Castle. The Scargill Estate encompasses attractive moorland and woodland, featuring abundant wildlife of special interest to bird enthusiasts. There are lovely walks and bridleways on the moor and along the River Greta. Practically no light pollution means amazing dark skies for all you stargazers too!
The stunning rural location of Thwaite Cottages is only a short drive to the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the town of Barnard Castle, and less than an hour to the city of Durham.
North Cottage offers lovely views over the beautiful countryside of Teesdale, is tastefully furnished and very well-equipped, providing home comforts and making it ideal for all families, couples, friends, and dog! The cottage sleeps four guests in two bedrooms, has lots of outside space, ample parking, and a garden with garden furniture.
Layout:
The front door brings you into a small porch with a built-in wardrobe for your coats and boots.
Turn left into a spacious, comfortable living room with sofa, armchairs, coffee tables and bookshelves, as well as a traditional open log fire (logs provided), and wonderful views on both sides across the open countryside. The French windows open and lead onto the patio and large fenced garden.
Down a couple of steps from the living room into a bright, airy dining/kitchen. Fully fitted, it includes a fridge/freezer, electric oven and hob, microwave, kettle, toaster, and is very well-equipped for preparing, cooking, and serving meals.
The utility room near the back door in the kitchen has a washer/dryer, iron, and ironing board.
From the porch, turn right into the master bedroom, with a King size bed, bedside cabinets and lamps, wardrobe, cheval mirror, and chest of drawers. There is a bathroom next to this bedroom with a shower, wash hand basin, W.C., and heated towel rail.
Up the stairs from the kitchen is the twin bedroom with two single beds, wardrobe, chest of drawers and chair. The en-suite bathroom has a bath/shower, W.C., and heated towel rail.
There is a large, enclosed/fenced garden in the back with patio furniture for those long summer evenings. Parking is at the front of the cottage.
Heating and electricity included in your rental. We provide all bedding, bed linen and towels, TV, and WiFi (subject to fair usage policy).
Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome at an added fee of £20 per dog.
Please note: Gardens/Outside areas not necessarily dog proof, even if fenced/walled, so dogs need to be kept under control at all times, especially near farm animals.
Generally a lovely cottage, well maintained and clean, and in a beautiful location. We loved it! The kitchen is well equipped and a good size, as was the lounge. Our son much appreciated the large screen TV! Also, the patio and back garden was a good size. The spring water is lovely. The beds were comfortable. The cottage was lovely and clean (although we did notice a few cobwebs in the downstairs bathroom). Also, your local agent knocked on our door when we were settling in, to check all was well - a nice touch.
It would be good if there was a shower in the upstairs bathroom. The present arrangement with the spray head does not work well, as you cannot regulate it accurately. Maybe an electric shower over the bath would be an idea. The broadband was a disappointment, especially bearing in mind the world cup! We appreciate that the rural location may make this difficult to provide, but the present arrangement does limit access considerably.

Lovely position in open country side. Character cottage with all mod cons tastefully furnished and spacious. We stayed Christmas week there was a Christmas tree (real) provided and a lovely open fire in the living room which made it very cosy. We found it very handy to have a back door leading to small lobby and off that a utility room ideal for drying off the wet and muddy dog. The above description says there's an electric fire in the Lounge when in fact its an open fireplace much preferred.
The showers could have been a bit more powerful.

The location was so peaceful, the cottage was beautiful, clean, comfortable and was a wonderful base for our holiday. We had to re-book our original date due to a family bereavement and Country Cottage Holidays were very approachable and accommodating towards us. We would defintely return there at a later date.
The shower in the twin room was not good! The shower head was really meant as a hand held one and was not easily adjustable.

We were there for month, joined by adult children for a long weekend and a friend for a night. All equipment satisfactory and appreciated instruction booklets for unfamiliar oven. Appreciated blowup bed for 5th person. I very much like that it was not only well equipped but well serviced by Joanne, with a weekly clean around and change of sheets. She is very much on hand and responds to calls but never intrudes. Began this time to explore the area around the cottage. It is less well marked than neighbouring areas but possible with map. This is our second stay and hope to be back soon.
Only reason I put 9 for furnishings and equipment is that although generally did not feel it needed any more equipment, because I was there for a long period, I missed a lemon squeezer and handle dropped off large frying pan, luckily when I was just lifting - not in mid air so no accidents. I let Joanne know. Otherwise I liked that it was spacious and uncluttered.

The cottage was very clean and the complimentary tea and coffee etc on arrival were a nice touch. There was lots of information available about the local area which was very helpful. The cottage was well located for a very peaceful stay. We found the availability of WIFI at the cottage helpful for locating nearby restaurants, pubs and attractions.
It would have finished it off nicely if there had been a BBQ available to use at the cottage as we had a few nice evenings and wished there had been one! The only other thing to list somewhere in the cottage would be what goes in each bin (recycling) as the bins we have at home were very different so at the end of the week we were unsure as to what went where!

Cancellation: The Holidaymaker is liable for the total hire charge unless written notice of the intention to cancel the booking is received at least eight weeks prior to the commencement of the holiday. The deposit paid to confirm the booking, and other monies paid, will only be refunded if the Owner is able to re-let the holiday cottage for the period of the holiday let. In the event of re-letting, the Owner will retain the sum of 100GBP to cover administrative costs and (subject to deduction of that sum) refund to the Holidaymaker the balance of monies received from the Holidaymaker, or the sum received from re-letting whichever sum shall be the lower. Every effort will be made to re-let a cancelled booking, but the Holidaymaker is advised to take out holiday insurance to cover that eventuality.
