North Cottage is one of three secluded cottages converted from the original Thwaite Farmhouse and Barns on the Scargill Estate, near Barnard Castle. The Scargill Estate encompasses attractive moorland and woodland, featuring abundant wildlife of special interest to bird enthusiasts. There are lovely walks and bridleways on the moor and along the River Greta. Practically no light pollution means amazing dark skies for all you stargazers too!
The stunning rural location of Thwaite Cottages is only a short drive to the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the town of Barnard Castle, and less than an hour to the city of Durham.
North Cottage offers lovely views over the beautiful countryside of Teesdale, is tastefully furnished and very well-equipped, providing home comforts and making it ideal for all families, couples, friends, and dog! The cottage sleeps four guests in two bedrooms, has lots of outside space, ample parking, and a garden with garden furniture.
Layout:
The front door brings you into a small porch with a built-in wardrobe for your coats and boots.
Turn left into a spacious, comfortable living room with sofa, armchairs, coffee tables and bookshelves, as well as a traditional open log fire (logs provided), and wonderful views on both sides across the open countryside. The French windows open and lead onto the patio and large fenced garden.
Down a couple of steps from the living room into a bright, airy dining/kitchen. Fully fitted, it includes a fridge/freezer, electric oven and hob, microwave, kettle, toaster, and is very well-equipped for preparing, cooking, and serving meals.
The utility room near the back door in the kitchen has a washer/dryer, iron, and ironing board.
From the porch, turn right into the master bedroom, with a King size bed, bedside cabinets and lamps, wardrobe, cheval mirror, and chest of drawers. There is a bathroom next to this bedroom with a shower, wash hand basin, W.C., and heated towel rail.
Up the stairs from the kitchen is the twin bedroom with two single beds, wardrobe, chest of drawers and chair. The en-suite bathroom has a bath/shower, W.C., and heated towel rail.
There is a large, enclosed/fenced garden in the back with patio furniture for those long summer evenings. Parking is at the front of the cottage.
Heating and electricity included in your rental. We provide all bedding, bed linen and towels, TV, and WiFi (subject to fair usage policy).
Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome at an added fee of £20 per dog.
Please note: Gardens/Outside areas not necessarily dog proof, even if fenced/walled, so dogs need to be kept under control at all times, especially near farm animals.

Really lovely cottage in a tranquil location, fully equipped with everything you need for a quiet comfortable stay. The views from every aspect are amazing and we can’t wait to come back to stay again.
One of the lamps in the upstairs bedroom didn’t work, maybe the bulb, but didn’t affect our stay.
Couldn’t find instruction manual for cooker/wash machine but presumed been removed for COVID reasons.

Would have loved to know how well stocked it was before we arrived and to be able to see more detailed reviews. It was amazingly well furnished and so amazing to have tin foil and cling film, wash capsules and washing up things - so handy not having to buy all that from Tesco for a 2 day stay! Beautiful location and gorgeous, idyllic cottage. Will recommend to friends!

Lovely stay as usual and we hope to return
We had no wi-fi at all during our stay- the weather was abnormal but really inconvenient in this day and age. No tv at all on first night but man next door cam to look and found a wire out in back of tv. Quilt and pillows in main room seemed very lumpy compared to previous stays? Don’t know if it was just me!

We love the cottages and keep coming back, great location with access to North Yorkshire and County Durham and lots of good facilities in Barnard Castle and the surrounding area.
The cottage is very clean but could do with a bit of redecoration in some areas.

We love the cottage, it’s well equipped, spacious and light.
It’s a bit ‘tired’ in places in the kitchen and sitting room - stain on carpet and on walls but we still love it!

Love the location and the homeliness of the cottage.
Neighbours were really great help, replacing broken toilet seat (found on arrival) and two lightbulbs needed replacing.
Cancellation: The Holidaymaker is liable for the total hire charge unless written notice of the intention to cancel the booking is received at least eight weeks prior to the commencement of the holiday. The deposit paid to confirm the booking, and other monies paid, will only be refunded if the Owner is able to re-let the holiday cottage for the period of the holiday let. In the event of re-letting, the Owner will retain the sum of 100GBP to cover administrative costs and (subject to deduction of that sum) refund to the Holidaymaker the balance of monies received from the Holidaymaker, or the sum received from re-letting whichever sum shall be the lower. Every effort will be made to re-let a cancelled booking, but the Holidaymaker is advised to take out holiday insurance to cover that eventuality.
