North Cottage is one of three secluded cottages converted from the original Thwaite Farmhouse and Barns on the Scargill Estate, near Barnard Castle. The Scargill Estate encompasses attractive moorland and woodland, featuring abundant wildlife of special interest to bird enthusiasts. There are lovely walks and bridleways on the moor and along the River Greta. Practically no light pollution means amazing dark skies for all you stargazers too!
The stunning rural location of Thwaite Cottages is only a short drive to the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the town of Barnard Castle, and less than an hour to the city of Durham.
North Cottage offers lovely views over the beautiful countryside of Teesdale, is tastefully furnished and very well-equipped, providing home comforts and making it ideal for all families, couples, friends, and dog! The cottage sleeps four guests in two bedrooms, has lots of outside space, ample parking, and a garden with garden furniture.
Layout:
The front door brings you into a small porch with a built-in wardrobe for your coats and boots.
Turn left into a spacious, comfortable living room with sofa, armchairs, coffee tables and bookshelves, as well as a traditional open log fire (logs provided), and wonderful views on both sides across the open countryside. The French windows open and lead onto the patio and large fenced garden.
Down a couple of steps from the living room into a bright, airy dining/kitchen. Fully fitted, it includes a fridge/freezer, electric oven and hob, microwave, kettle, toaster, and is very well-equipped for preparing, cooking, and serving meals.
The utility room near the back door in the kitchen has a washer/dryer, iron, and ironing board.
From the porch, turn right into the master bedroom, with a King size bed, bedside cabinets and lamps, wardrobe, cheval mirror, and chest of drawers. There is a bathroom next to this bedroom with a shower, wash hand basin, W.C., and heated towel rail.
Up the stairs from the kitchen is the twin bedroom with two single beds, wardrobe, chest of drawers and chair. The en-suite bathroom has a bath/shower, W.C., and heated towel rail.
There is a large, enclosed/fenced garden in the back with patio furniture for those long summer evenings. Parking is at the front of the cottage.
Heating and electricity included in your rental. We provide all bedding, bed linen and towels, TV, and WiFi (subject to fair usage policy).
Dogs are welcome at an added fee of £20 per dog.
Please note: Gardens/Outside areas not necessarily dog proof, even if fenced/walled, so dogs need to be kept under control at all times, especially near farm animals.
We loved the cottgae- spacious, clean, well laid out for a family stay and beautifully furnished, and with great views over the countryside from bedroom, bathroom , lounge, kitchen-excellent. Briliant location, quiet countryside, with access to the many towns and cities and for great walks, bike rides and car trips. Can't recommend the cottage too highly and hope to return one day.

The high standard of the accomodation and the furnishings. The safe enclosed garden was also a real bonus with young ones and a dog. This was a lovely break in a beautiful part of the world. We are already thinking of returning here or potentially to one of the other accomodations.
There was nothing we did not like!

Everything!!!!! This must be our 10th stay and this time we brought relatives from the USA. They thought they were in heaven. The weather made it more perfect with breakfast on the patio with lambs skipping around. Jo always makes us feel very welcome. We adore the isolation from our busy working lives.
Leaving!

The location is excellent from the point of view of being in a lovely quiet country location, which is what we wanted. We didn’t mind that there weren’t shops or pubs within walking distance.
The cottage is very pretty and furnished/equiped to a very high standard. It was very warm and comfortable.
The only difficulty we had was finding local walks that were clearly signed. Also, in retrospect maybe lambing season wasn’t the best time to visit as we have 2 dogs which had to be kept on their leads. So we ended up doing the circular walks around Barnard Castle and Cotherston.
On a very minor note, we did end up buying a plastic cutlery holder for the draining board to make washing up a bit easier.
