North Cottage is one of three secluded cottages converted from the original Thwaite Farmhouse and Barns on the Scargill Estate, near Barnard Castle. The Scargill Estate encompasses attractive moorland and woodland, featuring abundant wildlife of special interest to bird enthusiasts. There are lovely walks and bridleways on the moor and along the River Greta. Practically no light pollution means amazing dark skies for all you stargazers too!
The stunning rural location of Thwaite Cottages is only a short drive to the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the town of Barnard Castle, and less than an hour to the city of Durham.
North Cottage offers lovely views over the beautiful countryside of Teesdale, is tastefully furnished and very well-equipped, providing home comforts and making it ideal for all families, couples, friends, and dog! The cottage sleeps four guests in two bedrooms, has lots of outside space, ample parking, and a garden with garden furniture.
Layout:
The front door brings you into a small porch with a built-in wardrobe for your coats and boots.
Turn left into a spacious, comfortable living room with sofa, armchairs, coffee tables and bookshelves, as well as a traditional open log fire (logs provided), and wonderful views on both sides across the open countryside. The French windows open and lead onto the patio and large fenced garden.
Down a couple of steps from the living room into a bright, airy dining/kitchen. Fully fitted, it includes a fridge/freezer, electric oven and hob, microwave, kettle, toaster, and is very well-equipped for preparing, cooking, and serving meals.
The utility room near the back door in the kitchen has a washer/dryer, iron, and ironing board.
From the porch, turn right into the master bedroom, with a King size bed, bedside cabinets and lamps, wardrobe, cheval mirror, and chest of drawers. There is a bathroom next to this bedroom with a shower, wash hand basin, W.C., and heated towel rail.
Up the stairs from the kitchen is the twin bedroom with two single beds, wardrobe, chest of drawers and chair. The en-suite bathroom has a bath/shower, W.C., and heated towel rail.
There is a large, enclosed/fenced garden in the back with patio furniture for those long summer evenings. Parking is at the front of the cottage.
Heating and electricity included in your rental. We provide all bedding, bed linen and towels, TV, and WiFi (subject to fair usage policy).
Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome at an added fee of £20 per dog.
Please note: Gardens/Outside areas not necessarily dog proof, even if fenced/walled, so dogs need to be kept under control at all times, especially near farm animals.
The location, the walks, access to family research locations, visiting local attractions.
We cleaned the dishwasher otherwise no problems.

Clean, comfortable, good facilities.
We would have liked a handrail in at least one of the bathrooms to help getting in and out of the shower.

I assume 10 is the highest? The cottage was absolutely lovely. Very well equipped and in a beautiful location. We enjoyed every minute.
A previous occupant had left some nail varnish on chair and a glass in the kitchen. Lights not working on landing . Some underwear left in tiny drawer below mirror in main bedroom.
None of this detracted from the enjoyment of the holiday

Secluded but with some neighbouring houses so that Londoners wouldn't get too freaked out. Barnard Castle is a great market town nearby for meals, Tesco will deliver to the cottage. Great base for visiting Durham, Whitby, Newcastle and close to various good quality farm shops. We would definitely consider booking this house or one of the other two again.
The kitchen could do with a few more bits - there is just one rusting frying pan but about 7 pots and the dishwasher is very ineffective so we gave up using it in the end. That said, there were enough plates etc for a Royal banquet. Also, the heating was set so low and for such reduced hours that we were very cold at night for the first two days until we got the hang of it (it snowed so was quite cold). I used all the wood in the fireplace trying to warm up the house in the meantime. Also, the main sofa is about to die. It's starting to look like an old bean bag so needs replacing soonish.

It was in a beautiful location, quiet and peaceful and the accommodation was great, we all loved it and would diffidently come back for a fourth visit .
Difficulty opening and closing window above the sink in the kitchen had to stand on a chair, Heat sensor / smoke alarm in the kitchen kept going off when cooking ( very sensitive) Bulb went in a lamp there was replacement bulbs but none with the correct fitting for lamp. Also small amount of logs for the fire.

Good sized cottage with great enclosed garden for the dog. Lovely to ve able to walk directly from the cottage up on to the Moor.
Lovely clean and crisp bedding.
On the surface the cottage looks clean but it really needs a proper clean and re-decoration. Lots of dead flies about and had to wipe round hand basin. Didn't use hob but noticed it hadn't been cleaned from previous guests. I would only give it 3 stars.

House keeper very nice and helpful and I loved the roses. We all enjoyed the peaceful surroundings the walks and the lovely warm weather.
Only 2 out of 7 table lamps working or w/o bulbs, none in the twin room. I did not use oven as it set the smoke alarm off. Dusty surfaces eg around the tv. Previous tenant called 3 times to retrieve forgotten belongings. I thought standards disappointing from the memory of our last visit. A small hand rail would not be a miss between lounge & kitchen. I saw notice and the steps but still managed to fall!!! Only my dignity hurt fortunately!!!
