North Cottage is one of three secluded cottages converted from the original Thwaite Farmhouse and Barns on the Scargill Estate, near Barnard Castle. The Scargill Estate encompasses attractive moorland and woodland, featuring abundant wildlife of special interest to bird enthusiasts. There are lovely walks and bridleways on the moor and along the River Greta. Practically no light pollution means amazing dark skies for all you stargazers too!
The stunning rural location of Thwaite Cottages is only a short drive to the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the town of Barnard Castle, and less than an hour to the city of Durham.
North Cottage offers lovely views over the beautiful countryside of Teesdale, is tastefully furnished and very well-equipped, providing home comforts and making it ideal for all families, couples, friends, and dog! The cottage sleeps four guests in two bedrooms, has lots of outside space, ample parking, and a garden with garden furniture.
Layout:
The front door brings you into a small porch with a built-in wardrobe for your coats and boots.
Turn left into a spacious, comfortable living room with sofa, armchairs, coffee tables and bookshelves, as well as a traditional open log fire (logs provided), and wonderful views on both sides across the open countryside. The French windows open and lead onto the patio and large fenced garden.
Down a couple of steps from the living room into a bright, airy dining/kitchen. Fully fitted, it includes a fridge/freezer, electric oven and hob, microwave, kettle, toaster, and is very well-equipped for preparing, cooking, and serving meals.
The utility room near the back door in the kitchen has a washer/dryer, iron, and ironing board.
From the porch, turn right into the master bedroom, with a King size bed, bedside cabinets and lamps, wardrobe, cheval mirror, and chest of drawers. There is a bathroom next to this bedroom with a shower, wash hand basin, W.C., and heated towel rail.
Up the stairs from the kitchen is the twin bedroom with two single beds, wardrobe, chest of drawers and chair. The en-suite bathroom has a bath/shower, W.C., and heated towel rail.
There is a large, enclosed/fenced garden in the back with patio furniture for those long summer evenings. Parking is at the front of the cottage.
Heating and electricity included in your rental. We provide all bedding, bed linen and towels, TV, and WiFi (subject to fair usage policy).
Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome at an added fee of £20 per dog.
Please note: Gardens/Outside areas not necessarily dog proof, even if fenced/walled, so dogs need to be kept under control at all times, especially near farm animals.

Some of ceiling cobwebs and spiders need removing and shower head in ground floor bathroom needs limes ale removing

Everything that we needed. Convenient location for us.
Double mattress was quite uncomfortable, but this was probably a personal preference. Shower also lacks pressure, but I am guessing this was because of the source of the water, which was fine for our 4 night stay.

The location, amount of space in the cottage and furnishings are lovely. Very well equipped. Customer service from Christina was amazing, emailing out of hours to arrange the booking and flexibility in dates and rates. We really appreciated it.
The kitchen could do with a deep clean, there was a fair bit of grease on the oven, hob and extractor.

Even though it was cold outside the cottage was wonderfully warm which we very much appreciated. The layout of the cottage was good, the instruction manuals were very useful, the furnishings were very good quality, the "little extras" (soap etc) were all very good and also much appreciated. All in all we had a very enjoyable holiday and have already booked for June next year.
I have marked the cleanliness at 9 because, being ultra critical, there was a large bit of fluff under the kitchen radiator which we removed, some yellow grease hanging from the kitchen extractor fan, we removed as much as possible without climbing up, the oven hob could have been a bit cleaner, we left it as we found it. There were one or two cobwebs elsewhere but, as I said, this is being very critical. Everything else was spotless, cleaner than my house!!
We did have a bit of trouble finding the turning off the A66 to Scargill because we did not see Rokeby. We saw the turning to Scargill but assumed there would be another one because we thought we had not passed through Rokeby. Perhaps 'X' miles from Scotch Corner would be simpler, or maybe it is just us!!

We loved North Cottage and everything from the booking process through to the accommodation itself was first class. A super location making many different areas accessible and we really appreciated the flexibility you gave us on arrival and departure dates - wish more companies would do the same! Thank you for a fabulous experience.
Opening and closing the front door is a bit of a challenge! It mostly has to be closed with a knee in the right place and we were concerned that the key might break off in the lock . We couldn't find any washing machine tablets, though plenty for the dishwasher.

Beautiful location, well equipped spacy cottage.
-Internet doesn't meet up with todays standards (1,6 mbps download & 0,3 mbps upload!!)
-matrasses were a bit wobbely
-at some points cleaning could have been better
Cancellation: The Holidaymaker is liable for the total hire charge unless written notice of the intention to cancel the booking is received at least eight weeks prior to the commencement of the holiday. The deposit paid to confirm the booking, and other monies paid, will only be refunded if the Owner is able to re-let the holiday cottage for the period of the holiday let. In the event of re-letting, the Owner will retain the sum of 100GBP to cover administrative costs and (subject to deduction of that sum) refund to the Holidaymaker the balance of monies received from the Holidaymaker, or the sum received from re-letting whichever sum shall be the lower. Every effort will be made to re-let a cancelled booking, but the Holidaymaker is advised to take out holiday insurance to cover that eventuality.
