North Cottage is one of three secluded cottages converted from the original Thwaite Farmhouse and Barns on the Scargill Estate, near Barnard Castle. The Scargill Estate encompasses attractive moorland and woodland, featuring abundant wildlife of special interest to bird enthusiasts. There are lovely walks and bridleways on the moor and along the River Greta. Practically no light pollution means amazing dark skies for all you stargazers too!
The stunning rural location of Thwaite Cottages is only a short drive to the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the town of Barnard Castle, and less than an hour to the city of Durham.
North Cottage offers lovely views over the beautiful countryside of Teesdale, is tastefully furnished and very well-equipped, providing home comforts and making it ideal for all families, couples, friends, and dog! The cottage sleeps four guests in two bedrooms, has lots of outside space, ample parking, and a garden with garden furniture.
Layout:
The front door brings you into a small porch with a built-in wardrobe for your coats and boots.
Turn left into a spacious, comfortable living room with sofa, armchairs, coffee tables and bookshelves, as well as a traditional open log fire (logs provided), and wonderful views on both sides across the open countryside. The French windows open and lead onto the patio and large fenced garden.
Down a couple of steps from the living room into a bright, airy dining/kitchen. Fully fitted, it includes a fridge/freezer, electric oven and hob, microwave, kettle, toaster, and is very well-equipped for preparing, cooking, and serving meals.
The utility room near the back door in the kitchen has a washer/dryer, iron, and ironing board.
From the porch, turn right into the master bedroom, with a King size bed, bedside cabinets and lamps, wardrobe, cheval mirror, and chest of drawers. There is a bathroom next to this bedroom with a shower, wash hand basin, W.C., and heated towel rail.
Up the stairs from the kitchen is the twin bedroom with two single beds, wardrobe, chest of drawers and chair. The en-suite bathroom has a bath/shower, W.C., and heated towel rail.
There is a large, enclosed/fenced garden in the back with patio furniture for those long summer evenings. Parking is at the front of the cottage.
Heating and electricity included in your rental. We provide all bedding, bed linen and towels, TV, and WiFi (subject to fair usage policy).
Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome at an added fee of £20 per dog.
Please note: Gardens/Outside areas not necessarily dog proof, even if fenced/walled, so dogs need to be kept under control at all times, especially near farm animals.
The cottage was warm and comfortable. The real fire made our stay more enjoyable.

North Cottage is getting tired and needs refreshing throughout the fittings in the bathroom could do with modernising the showers are poor the wood topped window ledges are not very good ether wood has swollen. Patio doors could do with being fixed, utilities back door has seen better days it's rotten at the bottom and the living room ceiling has got the marks/damp patch as last year, we love the cottage but like I have said it needs refreshing.

Lovely location. Joanne came and sorted central heating system as it was full on when we arrived and no instructions. One evening as chilly and we thoroughly enjoyed the log fire.
Duvet was rather heavy. Would have liked a summer weight......and we did miss kitchen scissors.
Spoke to Joanne who was most helpful........she said there had been scissors there... Probably went into rubbish bin at some time.
All I all...a fabulous break in a delightful cottage. June and Barry

We just love it here and return every year. We love the location and the cottage is beautiful. Jo always ensures it's spotless and is there to hand if there are any problems - not that there ever are. The Christmas tree was a lovely touch.
I would probably just say that after coming for 8 years it is just starting to show that it needs a little bit of TLC in a couple of places so it's only practically perfect rather than totally. I don't want that to sound harsh in any way as it is still wonderful.

We loved our stay at North cottage So much we have already booked our next cottage. The fixtures and fittings were of good quality, we needed nothing. Thank you for a lovely stay
Couldn't fault the cottage except for one minor thing the on suite upstairs bathroom has a noisy water system when flushing not good at 3 in the morning!
Cancellation: The Holidaymaker is liable for the total hire charge unless written notice of the intention to cancel the booking is received at least eight weeks prior to the commencement of the holiday. The deposit paid to confirm the booking, and other monies paid, will only be refunded if the Owner is able to re-let the holiday cottage for the period of the holiday let. In the event of re-letting, the Owner will retain the sum of 100GBP to cover administrative costs and (subject to deduction of that sum) refund to the Holidaymaker the balance of monies received from the Holidaymaker, or the sum received from re-letting whichever sum shall be the lower. Every effort will be made to re-let a cancelled booking, but the Holidaymaker is advised to take out holiday insurance to cover that eventuality.
