North Cottage is one of three secluded cottages converted from the original Thwaite Farmhouse and Barns on the Scargill Estate, near Barnard Castle. The Scargill Estate encompasses attractive moorland and woodland, featuring abundant wildlife of special interest to bird enthusiasts. There are lovely walks and bridleways on the moor and along the River Greta. Practically no light pollution means amazing dark skies for all you stargazers too!
The stunning rural location of Thwaite Cottages is only a short drive to the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the town of Barnard Castle, and less than an hour to the city of Durham.
North Cottage offers lovely views over the beautiful countryside of Teesdale, is tastefully furnished and very well-equipped, providing home comforts and making it ideal for all families, couples, friends, and dog! The cottage sleeps four guests in two bedrooms, has lots of outside space, ample parking, and a garden with garden furniture.
Layout:
The front door brings you into a small porch with a built-in wardrobe for your coats and boots.
Turn left into a spacious, comfortable living room with sofa, armchairs, coffee tables and bookshelves, as well as a traditional open log fire (logs provided), and wonderful views on both sides across the open countryside. The French windows open and lead onto the patio and large fenced garden.
Down a couple of steps from the living room into a bright, airy dining/kitchen. Fully fitted, it includes a fridge/freezer, electric oven and hob, microwave, kettle, toaster, and is very well-equipped for preparing, cooking, and serving meals.
The utility room near the back door in the kitchen has a washer/dryer, iron, and ironing board.
From the porch, turn right into the master bedroom, with a King size bed, bedside cabinets and lamps, wardrobe, cheval mirror, and chest of drawers. There is a bathroom next to this bedroom with a shower, wash hand basin, W.C., and heated towel rail.
Up the stairs from the kitchen is the twin bedroom with two single beds, wardrobe, chest of drawers and chair. The en-suite bathroom has a bath/shower, W.C., and heated towel rail.
There is a large, enclosed/fenced garden in the back with patio furniture for those long summer evenings. Parking is at the front of the cottage.
Heating and electricity included in your rental. We provide all bedding, bed linen and towels, TV, and WiFi (subject to fair usage policy).
Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome at an added fee of £20 per dog.
Please note: Gardens/Outside areas not necessarily dog proof, even if fenced/walled, so dogs need to be kept under control at all times, especially near farm animals.
We love the layout of the cottage, it has everything in there that you could need and the garden is lovely.

We love the homeliness of the cottage and the good sized garden for the dogs. The views from the windows are lovely, especially in April when new born lambs can be seen and heard.

The cottage was beautifully clean and we love the location - it feels remote but you are handy for Reeth, Barnard Castle and the A66. Garden is really great for the dog, and the open fire was lovely to have and its great that a supply of logs is given. The cottage is well equipped and cosy.
The only thing we were not so happy about was some bags of dog poo left in the back garden from previous visits. Also the Woden edging round the lawn at the back door near the oil tank is really slippery!

Our second stay and even better than the first, love the house, love the location. Logistics are so easy ie turn up and get the key from the box and start our holiday! Cottage really warm and we love the open fire. Big thumbs up.
The hot water wasn’t great. So baths and showers were tepid. Be great to sort this please.

Probably the best cottage we have stayed in. As a result, an excellent holiday. Not in the heart of the Dales, nevertheless well situated for visiting them while being close enough to Barnard Castle for shopping etc. Need I say more?
Directions to the cottage from Scotch Corner don't make sense in my opinion, you mention a distance of about 1.4 or 1.5 miles, not clear where that is from. Fortunately I had checked out maps beforehand and worked out where the cottage is; also satnav did work.

We love this cottage. The furniture and furnishings are all good quality and the kitchen is very well equipped. The rooms are spacious. The garden is a good size for the dogs.
We love the area because it is quiet. This year we had the bonus of many lambs in the surrounding fields.
It was a lovely, relaxing break. We hope to book two separate weeks next year.
Apart from the microwave oven not working, which we only discovered, and reported, near the end of the holiday, everything was fine.

Fantastic place, loved it. We’ll book again.
Issue with downstairs toilet not flushing. Efficiently resolved. The catch on the upstairs window was a bit loose. The kitchen needs a teapot.
Cancellation: The Holidaymaker is liable for the total hire charge unless written notice of the intention to cancel the booking is received at least eight weeks prior to the commencement of the holiday. The deposit paid to confirm the booking, and other monies paid, will only be refunded if the Owner is able to re-let the holiday cottage for the period of the holiday let. In the event of re-letting, the Owner will retain the sum of 100GBP to cover administrative costs and (subject to deduction of that sum) refund to the Holidaymaker the balance of monies received from the Holidaymaker, or the sum received from re-letting whichever sum shall be the lower. Every effort will be made to re-let a cancelled booking, but the Holidaymaker is advised to take out holiday insurance to cover that eventuality.
