North Cottage is one of three secluded cottages converted from the original Thwaite Farmhouse and Barns on the Scargill Estate, near Barnard Castle. The Scargill Estate encompasses attractive moorland and woodland, featuring abundant wildlife of special interest to bird enthusiasts. There are lovely walks and bridleways on the moor and along the River Greta. Practically no light pollution means amazing dark skies for all you stargazers too!
The stunning rural location of Thwaite Cottages is only a short drive to the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the town of Barnard Castle, and less than an hour to the city of Durham.
North Cottage offers lovely views over the beautiful countryside of Teesdale, is tastefully furnished and very well-equipped, providing home comforts and making it ideal for all families, couples, friends, and dog! The cottage sleeps four guests in two bedrooms, has lots of outside space, ample parking, and a garden with garden furniture.
Layout:
The front door brings you into a small porch with a built-in wardrobe for your coats and boots.
Turn left into a spacious, comfortable living room with sofa, armchairs, coffee tables and bookshelves, as well as a traditional open log fire (logs provided), and wonderful views on both sides across the open countryside. The French windows open and lead onto the patio and large fenced garden.
Down a couple of steps from the living room into a bright, airy dining/kitchen. Fully fitted, it includes a fridge/freezer, electric oven and hob, microwave, kettle, toaster, and is very well-equipped for preparing, cooking, and serving meals.
The utility room near the back door in the kitchen has a washer/dryer, iron, and ironing board.
From the porch, turn right into the master bedroom, with a King size bed, bedside cabinets and lamps, wardrobe, cheval mirror, and chest of drawers. There is a bathroom next to this bedroom with a shower, wash hand basin, W.C., and heated towel rail.
Up the stairs from the kitchen is the twin bedroom with two single beds, wardrobe, chest of drawers and chair. The en-suite bathroom has a bath/shower, W.C., and heated towel rail.
There is a large, enclosed/fenced garden in the back with patio furniture for those long summer evenings. Parking is at the front of the cottage.
Heating and electricity included in your rental. We provide all bedding, bed linen and towels, TV, and WiFi (subject to fair usage policy).
Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome at an added fee of £20 per dog.
Please note: Gardens/Outside areas not necessarily dog proof, even if fenced/walled, so dogs need to be kept under control at all times, especially near farm animals.

I know the cottage from other stays and love the location. Cottage is well equipped.
I suspect this is a chronic problem but downstairs toilet did not flush well. I only used it at night as I was sleeping downstairs and used the upstairs toilet during the day.

I have previously used Country Cottage Holidays and will use them again. Their properties are reasonably priced and are maintained to a high standard. North Cottage, Scargill is a good sized cottage in a quiet rural location. A great place to base yourself for a relaxing break and to tour the surrounding area. There's plenty to see and do in the local area, castles, country houses, walks, etc. I found that one week was not long enough.to fit everything in.

Stunning location. Spacious. Clean. Very well equipped, plenty of cutlery and a good selection plates, bowls etc, unlike some that give you 4 of everything! Neighbours were friendly and quiet.
I had to buy kitchen rolll, I expected that to be provided and there was no dustpan and brush available.

Ground floor bedroom and toilet and bathroom.
Beautiful countryside. Peaceful location. Parking. Spacious.
The ground floor bathroom appeared to have a slight damp problem. The flooring seemed to need attention. Having said that it was great to have a ground floor shower and toilet as my wife has mobility issues.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

The cottage is always ready and is warm and dry. We particularly like the open fire.
I suggest that kindling (as well as fire lighters) is provided for the fire.

Bright, spacious rooms; Pleasant, attractive decor; Very well equipped kitchen; Lovely views and surrounding countryside; Very relaxing place to stay,.
It may seem that I've listed more negatives (below) than positives but we very much enjoyed our stay and really liked the house.
Downstairs toilet didn't flush very well; Would be good to have a non-slip mat in the downstairs shower (I didn't realise how slippy it was until I was already in the shower!); The double bed seemed to have developed hollows where people sleep so it was a bit too soft and saggy for us; Found it difficult to get the front door to shut properly.

Our second stay here, we really love the cottage. Lots of space, quiet yet well situated for visiting Teesdale and the Yorkshire Dales. Barnard Castle is only a few minutes drive away and is itself a pleasant place with many amenities.
Check the free standing cupboard in the kitchen, it almost fell on me once.
Cancellation: The Holidaymaker is liable for the total hire charge unless written notice of the intention to cancel the booking is received at least eight weeks prior to the commencement of the holiday. The deposit paid to confirm the booking, and other monies paid, will only be refunded if the Owner is able to re-let the holiday cottage for the period of the holiday let. In the event of re-letting, the Owner will retain the sum of 100GBP to cover administrative costs and (subject to deduction of that sum) refund to the Holidaymaker the balance of monies received from the Holidaymaker, or the sum received from re-letting whichever sum shall be the lower. Every effort will be made to re-let a cancelled booking, but the Holidaymaker is advised to take out holiday insurance to cover that eventuality.
