March 2013

I thought I should say something about the Goats in the quarry at Bay Farm, which are popular with visitors, especially the children. There used to be five, but now there are only two left. The others have died of old age. This one in the picture lived to be 18 years old, which is a great age for a goat. They chose to live in the quarry instead of their shed in the field, because the quarry provides them with shelter and a wide variety of natural feed. Goats like to range, and are very selective feeders.

beautiful soft fine fibre, which is used to make cashmere garments, comes from goats. China has the largest number of Cashmere Goats in the world, and Scotland has to import all the raw fibre. The textile industry is very important to Scotland, and in 1980s the Government wanted to encourage farmers to keep goats for cashmere. These goats are the last of our Cashmere Flock. We were part of Cashmere Breeders Ltd, which was a company set up by the Hill Farming Research Institute to breed goats for the Scottish Cashmere Industry. We managed to breed goats with very fine cashmere, but not enough farmers were interested to make the project worthwhile. Keeping goats was too labour intensive. Now they are used to control scrub on cliffs as shown on Country file last Sunday. These last two goats are twins and were born at Bay Farm. They are about 14 years old, and have lived happily here all their lives. Come and see them.

Best wishes
